Monrovia – Construction of the China-funded overpass bridges project along the Tubman Boulevard is advancing steadily, with the Ministry of Public Works or MPW reporting that the project has reached just over 22 percent completion and remains on schedule for its October 2027 delivery.

The China-Aid Two Overpass Bridges Project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving road safety in Monrovia and its environs, is being implemented by the China Road and Bridge Corporation in partnership with the Government of Liberia.
Speaking at a news conference held at the Ministry on Wednesday, April 16, 2026, Deputy Minister for Technical Services and Acting Minister, Mr. Prince D. Tambah, Sr., explained that the project, which was officially launched following agreements reached at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation summit in Beijing, forms part of Liberia’s urban transport modernization plan under the Ministry of Public Works and aligns with the government’s ARREST Agenda.
Early Progress
Since groundbreaking in September 2025, Acting Minister Tambah noted that work at both the western and eastern overpass sites has progressed without major delays.
As of April 13, he said engineers reported to MPW that approximately 21.55 percent of the overall project has been completed, an indication that construction is tracking within its planned timeline.
According to him, all key milestones are reportedly being met, with construction teams working simultaneously across multiple fronts, including road works, structural foundations, and protective installations.
Key Construction Milestones
He furthered that significant portions of preparatory and foundational work have already been achieved.
“For instance, road clearing at both overpass sites has been fully completed. Excavation of existing pavement stands at just over 46 percent. Subgrade earthworks and stonework have reached nearly 47 percent completion. Retaining wall construction is more than halfway done at approximately 54 percent. Also, pile foundation work, a critical structural component, has reached 62 percent,” the Technical Services Minister told the media.
At the western overpass, Minister Tambah asserted that specialized works such as shotcrete and spray protection are nearing completion at over 95 percent, signaling readiness for more advanced structural phases. However, he disclosed that pile cap installation remains in its early stages, with just over 8 percent completed.
Acting Minister Tambah indicated that base and sub-base course installations across both sites are progressing steadily, currently ranging between 34 and 35 percent completion.
Strategic Importance
Once completed, Minister Tambah informed Liberians that the two overpass bridges are expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion along Tubman Boulevard, one of Monrovia’s busiest corridors, while enhancing safety for motorists and pedestrians alike.
The project, which is funded by the Government of the People’s Republic of China, represents a key component of ongoing bilateral cooperation between Liberia and China in infrastructure development.
Tambah maintained that continued progress will depend on sustained coordination between contractors, government agencies, and local stakeholders, though he expressed confidence that the project will meet its two-year construction timeline.
