FROM TRASH TO TREASURE: CNC-L Launches Liberia’s First Plastic Waste Buying Center to Combat Pollution

PAYNESVILLE – In a decisive move toward environmental sustainability and economic empowerment, the Champions for Nature Conservation Liberia (CNC-L) has officially launched its first-ever Plastic Waste Buying Station, signaling a pivotal shift in how the nation addresses its growing waste crisis.

The initiative, held under the theme: “From Trash to Treasure: Reducing plastic waste by adding value to waste and enhancing environmental conservation,” was commissioned over the weekend in the A.B. Tolbert Road Community, located behind the Hope for Women Clinic.

The newly commissioned station serves as a central hub where citizens can exchange collected plastic waste for cash.

For years, Monrovia’s streets and waterways have been clogged by single-use plastics—primarily water sachets and PET bottles—that threaten both public health and marine ecosystems.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Executive Director of CNC-L, Moses Massah, emphasized that the station is not just a recycling point, but an economic engine designed to encourage responsible waste management while creating tangible financial opportunities for residents.

“Today marks a major step toward a cleaner environment and a stronger recycling economy,” Mr. Massah said. “This initiative is designed to encourage individuals within the project communities to practice responsible plastic waste collection while creating economic opportunities.”

The project is part of a wider waste management effort funded by the UNDP Liberia GEF/SGP.

Residents from A.B. Tolbert Road, ELWA, Police Academya nd VOA communities are now encouraged to bring their plastic materials—specifically water sachets and bottles—to the station for purchase.

According to CNC-L, the project aims to tackle the plastic menace through a strategic framework: “Collection & Procurement: Providing a reliable marketplace for local waste pickers and households to sell plastic debris. Value Addition: Sorting and processing collected waste to be repurposed for industrial use or recycled products, and Conservation Education: Using the station as a community center to educate the public on the long-term impacts of plastic pollution on Liberia’s biodiversity.”

“We are changing the narrative from viewing plastic as a nuisance to seeing it as a resource,” a spokesperson for CNC-L added.

“By putting a price tag on plastic waste, we are incentivizing every Liberian to become a steward of the environment while putting money back into their pockets.”

The launch has been met with enthusiasm by local residents, particularly women and youth groups who often rely on informal labor.

By formalizing the plastic trade, CNC-L provides a consistent stream of income for those on the front lines of urban sanitation.

Environmental expert Dr. Nathaniel Blama at the event, noted that the “Trash to Treasure” model is essential for Liberia, where formal waste management infrastructure often struggles to keep pace with rapid urbanization.

While the CNC-L’s station is a first-of-its-kind milestone, the organization is calling on the government and international partners to scale the model across other counties.

As the facility opens its doors, the sight of residents lining up with bags of plastic marks a hopeful transition toward a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous Liberia.

The success of the project, observers say, will now depend on the collective will of the Liberian people to stop littering and start “banking” their plastic.
