Maternal Health Facility Unveiled at JFK Medical Center
A newly renovated maternal health facility at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center has been officially unveiled, to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths in hard-to-reach communities across Maryland County.
Speaking at the dedication ceremony, Health Minister Dr. Louis Kpoto expressed gratitude to the Government of Japan for its support, describing the facility as a “sanctuary of hope.” She also announced plans to establish a biomedical training school to bolster equipment maintenance capacity and improve overall healthcare delivery.
Japan’s Ambassador to Liberia, Toshimoto Hiroshi, said the initiative reflects a shared commitment to improving maternal healthcare outcomes in the country. He noted that more than 40 healthcare workers have already been trained to strengthen quality management systems within the sector.
The Vice President also toured the facility following a media appearance on the Liberia Broadcasting System, where national development priorities were discussed.
New Broadcasting Complex Set for Dedication
In a separate development, a new broadcasting complex constructed with support from the Government of the People’s Republic of China is scheduled for official dedication on May 8, 2026, in Paynesville City. The project is expected to significantly enhance public service broadcasting and improve nationwide access to timely and reliable information.
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is expected to preside over the ceremony alongside the Chinese Ambassador to Liberia. The complex is the product of a bilateral agreement signed in April 2014 to refurbish and expand facilities of the Liberia Broadcasting System.
Food Authority Steps Up Safety Inspections
The Liberia Food Authority, under the leadership of Director General Mr. Kandiru, has ramped up inspections of food and beverage industries across the country. The initiative is designed to ensure compliance with national safety standards and protect public health.
Kandiru emphasized that stricter enforcement measures will be applied to guarantee safe food production and distribution nationwide — a move he said reflects the government’s broader commitment to public welfare.
