Liberia: House Backs Closure of GLS Menzies, Wants Drug Probe Persons of Interest Treated as Suspects

Monrovia — The House of Representatives has passed a resolution calling for the immediate closure of GLS Menzies and all businesses allegedly linked to the reported US$19 million drug trafficking case, escalating legislative pressure for stronger action against those connected to the ongoing investigation.

The resolution, unanimously adopted by all 37 lawmakers present during the session, also directs that individuals previously designated as “persons of interest” in the investigation be treated as suspects in accordance with Liberia’s amended Controlled Drugs and Substances Law, particularly Section 8.5 and relevant provisions under Section 14.

Lawmakers said the measure is intended to reinforce accountability, ensure the full enforcement of the country’s anti-drug laws, and serve as a deterrent against future narcotics-related crimes.

Members of the House argued that the growing concerns surrounding the alleged drug trafficking case require stronger legal and institutional responses, including actions against businesses believed to have connections to the matter.

The resolution received unanimous support, with all 37 lawmakers in attendance voting in favor. There were no abstentions and no votes against the measure.

The House’s decision now places additional pressure on authorities investigating the case, as legislators seek tougher measures against individuals and entities linked to the alleged drug operation.

The resolution will now be transmitted to the Liberian Senate for concurrence before any further legislative action can be taken.
