MONROVIA –Labour Minister Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah Sr. has identified unemployment and the principle of equal pay for equal work as major challenges currently confronting Liberia’s labour sector.
He emphasized that addressing these issues remains a top priority for the Ministry of Labour.
Minister Kruah noted that job protection and gender equity in the workplace are critical concerns not only for Liberia but also for many countries around the world. He stressed the importance of collective national dialogue, urging all Liberians—including those in the private sector—to actively engage in finding sustainable solutions.
The Labour Minister made these remarks during an acquaintance visit by executives of a newly established labour advocacy group, the Liberia Labour Clinic, who formally introduced their organization to the Ministry.
Welcoming the delegation, Minister Kruah expressed his administration’s willingness to collaborate with the Liberia Labour Clinic. He encouraged the group to serve as a whistleblower and partner in supporting the Ministry’s efforts to effectively regulate and improve the labour sector.
He also highlighted several proactive interventions undertaken by the Ministry to address and mitigate labour violations across workplaces in Liberia.
The Minister further expressed appreciation for the group’s commitment to working alongside the Ministry.
“We are exploring alternative dispute resolution mechanisms as a means of addressing some of these labour issues more effectively,” Minister Kruah stated.
Earlier, the Executive Director of the Liberia Labour Clinic, D. Eric Kpayea, commended Minister Kruah and the Ministry for the progress made in restoring dignity to Liberia’s labour sector.
Introducing the organization, Mr. Kpayea explained that the Liberia Labour Clinic aims to advocate for both employers and employees while
promoting compliance with Liberia’s labour laws, including the Decent Work Act.
Mr. Kpayea, a former Inspector General of the Ministry of Labour, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Clinic and the Ministry to strengthen labour protections, enhance workers’ rights, and promote a safe and decent working environment.
