Liberia: LWSC, World Bank Launch Key Mission to Fast-Track Completion of Urban Water Supply Project

MONROVIA — The Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), in collaboration with the World Bank and the Project Implementation Unit (PIU), has commenced a week-long Implementation Support Mission aimed at accelerating the completion of the Liberia Urban Water Supply Project (LUWSP) and ensuring its successful closure.

The mission, which ran  from June 15 to June 19,  brought  together technical experts, project managers, and development partners to assess the overall progress of the project and address any remaining challenges that could hinder its timely completion.

According to LWSC, the mission is primarily focused on reviewing the status of major civil works and ensuring that all infrastructure components are completed and commissioned before the project officially closes later this year.

The team is conducting detailed assessments of key project activities, including ongoing civil works contracts, water meter installations, engineering operations, monitoring and evaluation processes, financial management, procurement activities and compliance with environmental and social safeguard requirements.

As part of the exercise, mission members are also carrying out site inspections and engaging in technical discussions to identify outstanding issues requiring immediate corrective actions.

LWSC said the mission represents a critical step in ensuring that all project objectives are achieved and that investments made under the Liberia Urban Water Supply Project deliver long-term benefits to urban communities across the country.

The support mission will further examine project closure and post-closure arrangements to guarantee the sustainability of infrastructure and services established under the initiative.

Officials noted that the outcomes of the mission are expected to strengthen implementation efforts, improve decision-making and enhance the delivery of safe and reliable water services to residents in urban Liberia.

The Liberia Urban Water Supply Project is one of the country’s major water sector initiatives aimed at expanding access to improved water services and strengthening the operational capacity of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation.
