MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has relieved Ambassador Sheikh Al-Moustapha Kouyateh of his duties as Ambassador-at-Large for Special Duties and Special Presidential Envoy effective immediately.

The decision comes amid controversy surrounding recent public statements made by Ambassador Kouyateh and follows a vote of no confidence passed by members of the House of Representatives.
In a letter addressed to Kouyateh, President Boakai said concerns raised by the House of Representatives coupled with subsequent communications from lawmakers expressing a vote of no confidence in his continued service had created circumstances requiring presidential intervention.
“The implementation of the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development requires strong working relationships among national institutions in pursuit of the common good,” President Boakai stated.
The President emphasized that the success of Liberia’s national development agenda depends on constructive engagement, mutual respect, and effective collaboration among the three coordinate branches of government.
Ambassador Kouyateh was appointed Ambassador-at-Large by President Boakai in March 2024 and subsequently undertook several diplomatic missions across Africa on behalf of Liberia.
However, following a recent public outburst while serving in his official capacity, he was summoned by the House of Representatives to clarify statements attributed to him.
Lawmakers later expressed their dissatisfaction through a vote of no confidence, prompting further action from the Executive Mansion.
Despite the dismissal, President Boakai thanked Ambassador Kouyateh for his service to the nation and wished him success in his future endeavors.
Kouyateh is the founder and political leader of the Liberia First Movement (LFM) and was a candidate in Liberia’s 2023 Presidential Election.
Following his elimination from the race, he endorsed Boakai during the presidential runoff.
A prominent figure in Liberian politics, business and religious circles, Kouyateh has remained active in national affairs for more than a decade.
Born on December 24, 1978, in Saclepea, Nimba County, he has served in several business, diplomatic, and political roles, including as President and Chief Executive Officer of Farafina Investment Group and as Liberia’s Honorary Consul to Ukraine.
His political career also includes multiple bids for the Montserrado County Senate and his 2023 presidential campaign under the banner of the Liberia First Movement.
