
Monrovia — Liberia’s tourism sector has taken one of its most significant steps forward in decades following a high-level four-day mission to Malta by the Director General of the Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA), Princess Eva Cooper.

The visit, strengthened by a suite of strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), marks a decisive shift from policy ambition to real execution — unlocking new opportunities for skills development, institutional reform, private sector growth and global market access.
Malta—an EU tourism powerhouse of just 520,000 people—welcomes more than 4.5 million visitors annually, generating €3–5 billion and contributing nearly 20 percent of its GDP.
Liberia’s engagement with such a model represents a deliberate strategy to learn from proven systems capable of transforming natural assets into jobs, revenue and sustainable economic growth.
During her mission, Madam Cooper engaged an impressive range of public and private sector stakeholders, including: Representatives of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, the Malta Chamber of SMEs, and major hotel groups, Operators across digital innovation, hospitality, education and special interest travel, the extensive outreach signals Liberia’s intention to build a tourism ecosystem grounded in standards, innovation, and competitiveness, A Direct Pipeline to Skills, Jobs and Global Career Mobility
At the heart of the mission is a groundbreaking five-year partnership with Malta’s Institute of Tourism Studies, a globally respected institution. The agreement sets up a structured pathway for Liberian youth to access: Internationally accredited training, Practical internships in Europe, Career placement support within Malta’s hospitality industry, Exchange programs and mentorship, Scholarship opportunities.
For the first time, Liberia’s tourism sector will benefit from a full skills-to-employment pipeline, blending classroom learning with hands-on industry experience.
Malta will also deploy technical experts to Liberia to strengthen local training institutions, with discussions underway for establishing a satellite tourism training presence in Liberia.
LNTA’s engagement with the Malta Tourism Authority establishes a robust framework for institutional strengthening—essential for transitioning from an informal tourism landscape to a standards-based, internationally competitive industry.
The cooperation covers: Tourism policy development, Destination management and quality assurance, Sustainable tourism standards, Digital transformation, Joint marketing opportunities, Participation in global tourism platforms.
This alignment with international best practices positions Liberia to build a tourism sector capable of meeting modern expectations for visitor experience and service delivery.
