Liberia: Youth Leader Julius Nyerere Gbowee Completes Advanced Security Training at European Security and Defense College

MONROVIA – Liberian youth leader and President of the Association of Liberian Students in Europe, Julius Nyerere Gbowee, has successfully completed an Expert-Level Course on the Climate–Environment–Security and Defense Nexus at the European Security and Defense College (ESDC) in Brussels, Belgium.

By Francis G. Boayue

Gbowee’s participation in the prestigious program followed a nomination by the Embassy of the Republic of Liberia to the Benelux Countries and the European Union, underscoring the Embassy’s commitment to advancing the professional development of Liberians in areas of strategic international importance.

The intensive training brought together civilian, military and diplomatic professionals from across Europe and partner countries for practical, multi-stakeholder engagement on the growing links between climate change, environmental degradation, resource exploitation and global security challenges.

Participants examined how environmental and climate-related pressures increasingly affect international peace operations, security and defense policies.

The course also explored emerging security risks and collaborative policy responses to some of the most pressing global challenges of the 21st century.

Speaking after completing the program, Gbowee described the experience as a significant opportunity to strengthen his understanding of the intersection between climate change and international security.

“The training provided valuable insights into the evolving relationship between environmental challenges and global security concerns,” he said.

“The knowledge gained will support my ongoing work in peacebuilding, regional integration and policy research, particularly within West Africa and the ECOWAS region.”

Widely recognized for his contributions to youth leadership, peacebuilding and international diplomacy, Gbowee said the program reinforced his commitment to promoting international cooperation, knowledge exchange and evidence-based policy solutions to emerging security threats.

He expressed gratitude to the Embassy of Liberia to the Benelux Countries and the European Union for facilitating his participation and reaffirmed his dedication to applying the expertise acquired through the training to support peace, sustainable development and regional security initiatives in Liberia and across Africa.

The European Security and Defense College is a European Union institution that provides advanced education and training for civilian, military and diplomatic professionals in the fields of security, defense and the European Union’s Common Security and Defense Policy.
