MADRID, Spain — The Government of Liberia has taken a significant step toward expanding opportunities for young people, as high-level talks opened with the Real Madrid Foundation aimed at forging a partnership centered on sports, education, and youth empowerment.
The engagement, facilitated by the Embassy of Liberia near Paris, brought together Youth and Sports Minister Cornelia Wonkerleh Kruah, Liberia’s Ambassador to France Teeko Tozay Yorlay Sr., and Joseph Nyuma Boakai Jr. with the Foundation’s Managing Director Julio Gonzalez Ronco at its headquarters in Madrid.
According to a statement by the Liberian Embassy, the meeting marks part of Liberia’s broader push to leverage international partnerships to drive youth development, with sports diplomacy emerging as a key pillar of that strategy.
Officials said discussions focused on potential collaboration in sports-based education, community development, and youth empowerment programs—areas where the Real Madrid Foundation has built a global reputation for impact.
While still at an exploratory stage, both sides expressed optimism about the prospects of a formal partnership, signaling willingness to develop a structured framework that aligns international expertise with Liberia’s local development priorities.
Minister Kruah emphasized the government’s commitment to using sports as a vehicle for social transformation, noting that strategic partnerships can help bridge opportunity gaps for young Liberians.
The initiative was largely driven by efforts from Boakai Jr., whose role in convening the meeting highlights an increasing push by Liberian stakeholders to connect with globally recognized institutions capable of delivering long-term benefits.
The Real Madrid Foundation welcomed the engagement, describing it as a promising step toward expanding its outreach and deepening impact in Africa.
Diplomatic sources say the Liberian Embassy in Paris will continue consultations with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and other stakeholders to translate the discussions into concrete programs.
