The prestigious continental tournament is scheduled to take place in Monrovia in October 2026.

The association’s appreciation follows an official acknowledgment from the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, confirming that the President has reviewed NASAL’s proposal and initiated steps for further collaboration.

NASAL described the development as a significant milestone, noting that it demonstrates the government’s recognition of “mind sports” as a tool for national development.

The championship is expected to draw over 120 elite players from across Africa, positioning Liberia as a regional hub for intellectual competition and youth engagement.

Lester D. Morris Jr., President of NASAL, expressed gratitude for the executive branch’s responsiveness.

“We are deeply honored by the positive reception from the Office of the President and the Ministry of State,” Morris said. “This commitment reinforces our confidence that Liberia will successfully host one of Africa’s most prestigious Scrabble events. We look forward to continued collaboration to deliver a world-class championship.”

Mr. Morris also used the opportunity to call for broader support, urging both the public and private sectors to back the initiative. “We must think, love, and build Liberia,” he added, echoing the administration’s nationalistic slogan.

The Ministry of State reportedly commended NASAL for its efforts in securing the hosting rights, an achievement seen as a boost to Liberia’s rising profile within the global Scrabble community.

Preparations for ASC 16 are already underway. NASAL has begun engaging stakeholders and potential sponsors to ensure the event boosts local tourism and strengthens Liberia’s international sporting reputation.

The association maintains that it will work closely with the government and relevant institutions to ensure the tournament’s success.
